"ANNOUNCEMENT OF ENGAGEMENT MADE IN PARIS"

MRS. GOULD ENGAGED TO SON OF WEALTHY ARGENTINE PLANTER

New York City (JFK+50) On April 19, 1924, the Associated Press reports the engagement in Paris, France of Mrs. George J. Gould, Jr. and Carlos Ortiz Basualdo.

Mr. Basualdo, 23 year old son of a wealthy Argentine planter, will marry the former Laura Carter of Philadelphia "late this summer."

JFK+50 NOTE

George Jay Gould, Jr. (1896-1963) was the grandson of railroad baron Jay Gould.  He was born in New York City & educated at Columbia University & Columbia Law School.  His marriage to Laura Marguerite Carter in 1917 was disapproved by his parents.

The couple married in 1917, had two sons, then divorced in 1923.  Laura later married & then divorced English actor Roy Royston.  Presumably the engagement to Carlos Ortiz Basualdo was cancelled.

Mr. Basualdo married Leonora Hughes of the dance team "Maurice & Hughes" but drowned when his speedboat overturned in Argentina in December 1935.
